Security & defense: Morocco’s role as a center of excellence highlighted

Organized under the aegis of the Global Governance & Sovereignty Foundation (GGSF), the DefSec Morocco Forum, in its first edition, intervenes in an international context marked by profound changes and growing security challenges, demonstrated the Kingdom’s capacity to unite high-level strategic thinking.

Structured around three thematic round tables, the Forum explored the major axes which define the Kingdom’s strategic initiatives today. The first session, devoted to the development of a sovereign defense industry, made it possible to analyze Morocco’s significant progress in this decisive area and to highlight how the emergence of a national industrial and technological ecosystem responds to the sovereignty ambitions carried out. by His Majesty King Mohammed VI.

The Atlantic dimension of Moroccan strategy, the theme of the second round table, highlighted the unique positioning of the Kingdom as an interface between Europe, Africa and the Atlantic coast. Thus, the discussions demonstrated how this geostrategic position, reinforced by leading infrastructure such as the Africa Atlantic Gas Pipeline project, makes Morocco a key player in regional economic and maritime security.

As for the third session, dedicated to the role of research centers and the media, it confirmed the maturity of the national strategic debate, highlighting the growing engagement of think tanks, universities and the media in the analysis of issues. of strategy and defense which testifies to the emergence of a real interest in the subject in Morocco.

In a statement to the press, Ali Moutaib, president of the GGSF, welcomed the organization of this forum which illustrates the very important and strategic place of Morocco, under the enlightened vision of HM King Mohammed VI, noting that the Kingdom positions itself today as a pivot of stability.

In this sense, he noted that this Forum focuses on three essential issues, namely, the sovereign defense industry, the Atlantic and African vision of the Kingdom and the role of civil society, the media, Think tanks and academics, to develop a culture of strategy and defense.

For his part, Colonel Arsène Emvahou, Defense Attaché at the Gabonese Embassy in the Benelux, highlighted the role of Morocco, as a driving force and pioneer for all of Africa.

On this occasion, he wished to recall the “exceptional” speech delivered by HM King Mohammed VI before the 28th summit of the African Union (AU), on January 31, 2017 in Addis Ababa, which is intended as a reminder history of the place, as well as the assumed, assertive and fraternal ambition of the Kingdom of Morocco within the African community.

For his part, Nizar Derdabi, teacher and analyst in defense and security, indicated that this meeting sheds light on several substantive subjects, notably the defense industry in Morocco, a project which was launched by His Majesty the King in 2020, with the promulgation of Law No. 10-20 which laid the foundations for the future military defense industry.

Morocco has proven experience in the field of industry in the automobile and aeronautics sector, he noted, explaining that this new project, that of defense, has different specificities and special, given that it is based on high technology, technology with high added value and above all on confidentiality requirements.

It was useful to bring together experts from different backgrounds, military, defense experts, academics, private companies to try to put in place the future challenges of this industry, while proposing solutions and suggestions in matters of defense and security, he added.

Bringing together a range of stakeholders, this Forum was an opportunity to promote a fruitful exchange, in-depth reflection and transversal collaboration on the current and future challenges facing Morocco.

During this meeting, emphasis was placed on Moroccan initiatives in the development of a national defense industry, Morocco’s geostrategic role and its positioning as a pole of regional stability and Moroccan expertise in matters of crisis management and peacekeeping.

The success of this inaugural edition confirms the vocation of the DefSec Morocco Forum to become an essential annual meeting for the national and international strategic community.
