The winter viability of departmental roads is a mission carried out by the Yvelines-Hauts-de-Seine interdepartmental teams. Thanks to the mobilization of 230 agents from the two Departments, interventions are carried out during the winter in order to allow optimal traffic conditions on approximately 1,570 km of lanes of the road network of the two territories. At the same time, around 340 km of departmental roads located in urban areas are directly managed by local authorities.

Numerous actions implemented to optimize everyone’s safety

Until Monday March 17, 2025, 160 road officials will be available. Daily weather monitoring as well as monitoring of the road network by patrollingas soon as conditions require it, will be carried out. Depending on the evolution of weather conditions and the state of the road surface, treatment by salting or scraping in the event of snow will be carried out. The winter organization put in place is based on 40 agents placed on call 24 hours a day and equipment equipped and ready to intervene at any time (32 salt spreaders with snow removal blades). 4,000 tonnes of salt are stored across all depots and replenishments will be made throughout the winter.

The objective is to maintain minimum traffic conditions during the duration of the phenomenon (snow, ice, etc.) and to ensure a return to normal within a variable period depending on the climatic event and the importance of the roads
Furthermore, to cope with exceptional snowy episodes, a partnership approach with the agricultural profession has been initiated since 2011 in the Yvelin region. Agreements made with 15 farmers volunteers allow them to be involved in snow removal activities in rural areas (scraping snow-covered roads, clearing snowdrifts in plain areas, etc.).

First interventions from fall 2024

The first preventive interventions, carried out thanks to the Intervention and Operation Centers, will take place this fall, when the weather conditions require it. These night outings, during which a light salting is carried out prior to morning trafficintervene when temperatures are around 0°C with a risk of localized ice. It is therefore an action aimed at preserve the safety of users throughout the departmental network.
