The number of Swiss companies having to go out of business continues to increase worryingly, according to the Dun & Bradstreet firm. In October alone, the surge reached a quarter. French-speaking Switzerland is particularly affected.

Last month, 654 bankruptcies were recorded, 24% more than a year earlier, according to the press release published Tuesday. From January to October, 5,039 cases were counted, an increase of 17% over one year. The strongest increase was noted in the south-west of Switzerland (+27%). In the canton of Geneva, 554 cases were identified, compared to 427 in the first ten months of 2023. In the canton of Vaud, their number increased by almost 200. A drop of almost 30 bankruptcies was, however, reported in Valais .

Central Switzerland (+22%), the canton of Zurich (+17%), Ticino (+14%) as well as the north-west of the country (+13%) followed. Eastern Switzerland (+11%) and the Mittelland area (+9%) have not escaped this. For the latter, it was mainly the canton of Berne which was affected, then more slightly the canton of Neuchâtel. That of Friborg recorded a clear decline when the figures stagnated in the Jura.

At the same time, business creation remains moderate. In October, 4,444 companies were born, an increase of 5% compared to the same month of 2023. Over the first ten months of the year, Dun & Bradstreet recorded 43,606 new companies in the commercial register, or 3 % more in annual comparison. In French-speaking Switzerland, the cantons of Geneva (+2%), Neuchâtel (+3%), Valais (+6%), Vaud (+7%) and especially Friborg (+8%) have done well out. A decline of 1% was recorded in Jura.

The cantons of Uri (+13%), Appenzell Innerrhoden (+13%) and Outer Rhodes (+17%) recorded the highest increases. Conversely, Schaffhausen (-12%) and Thurgau (-6%) experienced the largest declines.
