The 106th congress of mayors of France opens Tuesday November 19, 2024. For the occasion, 39 town halls in Gard are closing their doors until Thursday. The goal? Protest against the savings asked of them. The draft finance law provides for nearly five billion euros in savings for communities. This is why Jean Oliva, the mayor of the town of Malons and Elze, 120 inhabitants in Hautes-Cévennes, decided to close the door from tomorrow: “We will arrive at a time when mayors will not renew their mandate. We're already not coping, we're putting in the effort, we're trying to commit to having crazy days. And if the State lets us down like that, I don't know where we're going to go.“
The three reasons for their anger
Making five billion euros in savings for communities: this is the objective stated by the government in the 2025 finance bill. To do this, the State wants to freeze the share of VAT paid each year to communities and thus save 1.2 billion euros. Another avenue considered: the elimination of part of the reimbursements for public works. What upsets Guy Chéron, the mayor of Génolhac, in Hautes-Cévennes, who initiated this action: “I don't know how I'm going to rehabilitate the six bridges that I have to rehabilitate. It’s impossible to do it alone.” He is also annoyed about a third and final point: increasing contributions for public employers.
The town halls concerned, however, remain contactable for the most urgent requests.
