Road safety: an essential priority for state services – November – 2024 – Press area – News

The road safety is one of the important and essential actions carried out by state services in Cantal.
Numerous information and prevention actions are thus regularly carried out, alongside checks carried out by the police and gendarmerie services, intended to combat road insecurity and strengthen road safety on Cantal roads.
During one of these checks, alongside the Cantal gendarmerie, Philippe Loos, prefect of Cantal, indicated his desire to strengthen them in order to research and combat dangerous behavior on the roads.
Mr. The prefect also recalled the importance of collective awareness and adaptation of behavior, because accidents mainly occur during daily journeys and are mainly due to behavior unsuitable for traffic conditions, inattention, lack of vigilance, with regularly the combination of several of these factors.
Driving at excessive speed, while having consumed alcohol or drugs, are extremely aggravating factors in the risk of a road accident:

• Speed is the leading cause of road mortality in France (31%). It is both a triggering factor in the accident, but also an aggravating factor. A variation in speed contributes to a significant variation in the risk of fatal accidents
• Alcohol is one of the leading causes of road deaths. Responsible for 30% of road deaths, the risk of being responsible for a fatal accident is multiplied by 17.8 among alcoholic drivers. Accidents involving alcohol are also more serious than others: the number of people killed per 100 injured hospitalized is 23 for accidents involving alcohol compared to 10 for accidents without alcohol.
• One in five fatal accidents involves a driver who is positive for narcotics. This proportion increases to one accident in three, at night during weekends.

The police carry out numerous inspection operations, particularly in the search for these serious offenses likely to cause an accident.

Thus, more than 700 administrative license suspensions, ranging from 4 to 12 months, have been pronounced since the start of 2024.
