“People are hungry, they are angry”, 6 years after the start of the yellow vest movement, the anger is still there

6 years ago, on November 17, 2018, the yellow vest movement began. Gatherings were organized in particular in this Saturday. A handful of demonstrators responded to the call.

“Join us, it’s going to be fun!” In the streets of Toulouse, a yellow vest calls out to passers-by. But it is a modest parade which is strolling this Saturday, November 16. 6 years after the start of this social movement against precariousness, taxes, the cost of fuel, the yellow vests are still there. But we are far from the tens of thousands of people gathered every Saturday for a year.

For the demonstrators present, the mobilization is not there but the reasons for the anger are more relevant than ever. Gabriel is a philosophy student. He participated in today's demonstration and is surprised.

“It's a social movement that has scared our leaders. I don't see why it wouldn't continue knowing that the social breakdown continues! Prices have exploded! There are more and more people who have less in less than enough to feed themselves. People are hungry, they are angry. I find it surprising that there are not more of us today than there were 6 years ago.regrets this Toulouse student.

In the procession that left Jean Jaurès early in the afternoon, Lisa is now thirty years old. She remembers the mobilizations when she was a student. She had followed them at a distance.

For her, all the conditions are met for the yellow vests to mobilize again. “We must all stand up, all in the streets in the face of the climate and social emergency. The yellow vests are anonymous, there is no leader”entrusts the young woman to our team of journalists on site Candice Antiga and Virginie Beaulieu.

In the street, not all passers-by are happy to see the yellow chasubles back.

“If they don’t break anything, they can demonstrate! But there aren’t many of them it seems to me”reacts a Toulouse woman on the sidelines of the procession.

Toulouse had been one of the spearheads of the protest.

In January 2019, violent clashes and scenes of urban guerrilla warfare shook the city with 350 arrests and 34 incarcerations at the time, indicated the public prosecutor. For their part, the demonstrators denounced the violence of police repression.

A month ago the State was ordered to pay 470,000 euros to the city of Toulouse for the damage caused during the demonstrations.
