The weekend is coming winter in Normandy, and particularly in Orne. Indeed, the cold and precipitation could bring frosts, but also black iceor even the first snowflakes.
The department of Ornehe is putting himself in working order for the whole of the winter with significant resources but also a well-established plan intended to make the traffic conditions for motorists.
A service that has been refined over the years
Patrolling, salting, snow removal… Near 6,000 km of departmental roads are processed on a daily basis, depending on their level of service. The winter system is officially mobilized from December 2, 2024 to March 3, 2025. But it can be deployed before, if necessary. Everything is ready!
The very first frosts already announce, the return of winter. And possible traffic difficulties on the roads. The Departmental Council anticipates.
Our services are already ready to implement the winter system, which is being refined over the years.
While calling on motorists to exercise the greatest caution: “When traffic conditions are not good, better to be extra vigilantor even cancel any trip that is not essential. Even if the roads are treated, “zero risk” does not exist! »
24/7 mobilization in case of bad weather
Throughout the winter season, no less than 220 agents of the Departmental Council are mobilized: meteorological monitoring, toured by patrollers on ten sectors of the departmentfeedback and dissemination of information, maintenance of equipment, treatment of ice and snow on the roads and management of salt stocks.
Traffic conditions live on Inforoutes.orne.fr
During the winter period, in the event of a proven road weather risk, specific information on the state of the roads is broadcast in the morning, potentially from 6:30 a.m. (depending on the importance of the phenomena and their temporality) to the state services and local media. It is also posted online on Inforoutes.orne.fr.
This interactive map, updated throughout the day when conditions require, allows you to plan or postpone your trip, and if necessary adjust your route according to traffic conditions, which are classified according to four levels :
C1 (normal): “Be careful. A road can never be considered safe.” ;
C2 (delicate): “Reduce your speed and be very vigilant. Increase your safety distances.” ;
C3 (difficult): “Postpone your trip if you do not have winter equipment adapted to your vehicle.”;
C4 (impossible): “Do not move!”.
In conjunction with Météo France, the Departmental Council's roads service ensures permanent monitoring.
As soon as the forecasts suggest a road weather risk, the ten intervention managers, in charge of a sector of the department, are placed on alert.
And it is based on phenomena observed in the fieldduring patrols, that interventions are triggered.
Municipalities and intermunicipalities in support
For the treatment of secondary departmental roads, the services of the departmental council are supported by the municipalities or intermunicipalitieson the basis of an agreement.
This system, which relies on the own resources of local authorities, makes it possible to reduce response times on the roads where the Department's services can only go when the main roads have been treated.
The departmental council can also count on the possible reinforcement of firefightersthe departmental fire and rescue service has four heavy vehicles equipped with snow removal blades.
Routes processed in order of priority
Agents treat departmental roads according to four levels of intervention, depending on the structuring nature of the road and its use.
- P1 Network (priority 1): 455 km, interventions 24/7.
- P2 Network (priority 2): 555 km, interventions 24/7 following network no. 1.
- P3 Network (priority 3): 2,225 km, interventions during the day following network no. 2.
- P4 Network (priority 4): 2,624 km, interventions for safety reasons (non-systematic) during the day following network no. 3.
Users urged to exercise caution
Any road user can contribute to considerably reducing risks and disruptions, in particular by finding out about traffic conditions and respecting the simplest safety instructions : equip your vehicle and adapt your driving to basic constraints.
Some figures
6,000 t of salt in stock, distributed among the road operating centers in Orne;
5,854 km of roads (priority 1: 455 km; priority 2: 550 km; priority 3: 2,225 km; priority 4: 2,624 km);
220 agents mobilized;
35 winter service vehicles (trucks, salt spreaders, snow plows).
During winter, it is essential to drive with caution and more particularly in the event of bad weather; any accident or leaving the road can worsen traffic conditions, by disturbing other users or preventing the passage of winter service equipment, or even emergency vehicles.
Users can count on the support of intervention services and are regularly informed of weather and road traffic conditions.
Good to know…
- L’grip on the road does not return to normal immediately after the passage of the salt spreader;
- Yes don't double the salt spreadersand snow removal equipment in action. In front of them, the road is untreated.
The user who commits this offense prevents salting and snow removal operations from taking place, at the risk of blocking traffic.
