Will Switzerland apply the European migration pact? – rts.ch

Switzerland, as a member of the Dublin agreements and the Schengen area, must adopt certain regulations from the migration pact adopted this year by the member states of the European Union. But strong criticism is already being felt, with a threat of a referendum.

The European migration pact aims to limit irregular migration. It notably provides for the “filtering” of migrants at borders and the collection of biometric data. Associations, cantons and parties were invited to comment on these provisions until Thursday. Conclusion: the vast majority of opinions are unfavorable.

Several asylum associations are threatening to attack this pact by referendum, denouncing a massive tightening of asylum rights. The Greens could also join forces with a possible referendum. For their part, the socialists are not moving forward, even if they make the same criticisms, in particular to avoid the detention of children.

“EURODAC is also a measure in this pact which involves collecting data from children from the age of 6. We need to ensure that the protection of the data of the families and children concerned is correct,” explained the advisor. Vaud national socialist Jean Tschopp in La Matinale.

Different opinions depending on the parties

The left also demands that Switzerland actively participate in the solidarity mechanism, by voluntarily taking care of refugees from Italy or Greece in the event of a crisis. This principle is provided for by the pact, but it is not binding on Switzerland.

The PLR refuses this solidarity mechanism, but the party adheres to other regulations. He is one of the only parties to defend them. For its part, the UDC completely rejects the pact. The party believes that Switzerland must remain autonomous in the protection of its borders.

The Federal Council will therefore have to deal with all these contradictory opinions. The government must define until December 12 how it wishes to apply this pact, the objective of which is to limit irregular migration.
