Verdun tightens the screws on alcohol: Ban on strong beers in the city center

The municipality of Verdun is taking drastic measures to fight against excessive alcohol consumption in its historic center. Faced with the increase in incidents, the mayor decided to ban the sale and consumption of strong beers in several emblematic streets of the Meuse city. A decision that could inspire other cities in the region.

A municipal decree to preserve public tranquility

No more cans of strong beer in the streets of Verdun. The mayor has just signed a order prohibiting the sale and consumption of these alcoholic beverages in eight city center arteries, including the famous Rue Mazel and Place Foch. This measure, which will come into force immediately, will extend until December 31, 2024.

An answer to nighttime disturbances

Local authorities noted a resurgence of public order disturbances linked to excessive alcohol consumption. Fights, nighttime noise, damage… so many nuisances that pushed the municipality to act. The ban concerns the sale of strong beers from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m., thus aiming to reduce excesses both during the day and at night.

The streets affected by the ban

The municipal decree specifically targets eight streets in downtown Verdun:

  • Rue Saint Sauveur
  • Rue Saint Victor
  • Rue du President Poincaré
  • Rue Beaurepaire
  • Avenue Garibaldi
  • Place Foch
  • Rue Mazel
  • Avenue de Gaulle

These arteries, located in the city center, are particularly busy and concentrate a large part of the city's nighttime activity.

An impact on local commerce

This decision will not fail to have impact on local businesses. Grocery stores and convenience stores in the city center will have to adapt their offering, while bars and restaurants will be required to scrupulously respect these new regulations. Violators are exposed to sanctions which could go as far as the administrative closure of their establishment.

A measure that is debated

While some residents welcome this initiative, others see it as an attack on their freedom. Trader associations, for their part, fear a drop in their turnover. The mayor of Verdun, however, assures that this measure is necessary to guarantee the safety and tranquility of residents and visitors.

For the Haut-Marnais who regularly visit Verdun, it will now be necessary adapt to these new rules. Lovers of strong beers will have to turn to other options or consume in moderation in authorized establishments. A change in habits which could well extend to other towns in the region if the Verdun experience proves conclusive.
