It was a day of mobilization at the call of the Force Ouvrière union in the hospital sector. “The watchwords are always the same“say the employees”but the situation does not change: we are at the end of our rope, we denounce institutional mistreatment, the lack of resources, the lack of qualified personnel, the lack of recognition”.
Lack of staff: the situation is far from improving
At the Bois Lamartine nursing home, in Tresserve (Savoie), patients, families and caregivers gathered outside around coffee and treats, brought by everyone. “We are here to denounce the deterioration of our working conditions” says Nathalie, caregiver and Force Ouvrière delegate. “I have been working in nursing homes for 40 years and really, we are not getting better. In addition, here, in Savoie, there is the problem of staff training. We have the feeling that all the trained staff go to work in Switzerland. As a result, it is up to us on the ground to support and train our colleagues. This takes time, on top of everything else. Coralie also testifies, she has worked for four years in this nursing home, without a diploma. “Normally I am ASH, Hospital Service Agent, I do maintenance and cleaning. But I have a contract as a caregiver. I do the same work as my fellow caregivers, without the salary that goes with it.” She would like to train, but says that the Management has not yet been able to offer her a secondment or financing so that she can complete her diploma.

Recognition of residents’ families
During the mobilization this morning, in front of the Bois Lamartine nursing home, several families of residents gave their support to the staff. “We can clearly see the work of the caregivers and nurses. They invest a lot, they always have a smile. I've never seen that.” says Renée, whose mother has been in the nursing home since last March. “The nursing assistants take as much time as possible to speak with the residents, to listen to them. But they have to do everything at once.”
Frédéric comes to visit his mother in the Alzheimer's unit. This former surgeon also recognizes the exceptional work of nursing assistants in particular “we see that they are passionate, but we also see that they have to do certain tasks on the line, even though that is not the heart of their job. They would like to be more in contact with the residents. In any case , when we come, and we see that they are around my mother, it warms my heart.”
