If many expected the appointment of Philippe Gilbert as the new coach of the Belgian cycling team, the Federation decided otherwise by appointing his compatriot Serge Pauwels. The former runner in the data dimension succeeds Sven Vanthourenhout. In addition to the selection, he also takes charge of the elite and U23 teams. To support him, De Clercq will manage the juniors and the cyclocross team.
“I am very honored to take this position, especially since we have one of the best generations of Belgians”reacted Pauwels, who wishes “create an ideal environment for runners and staff.” The new coach also indicated that he wanted to count on young talents. “I’m looking forward to seeing the juniors I’ve worked with over the last few seasons move up to the higher categories in the coming years.”
