A farmer from the English Channel is forced to leave his property due to the inexorable advance of the sea. For several years, he has witnessed the progressive erosion of his land, located in Montmartin-sur-Mer. Where its fields once extended, the ocean has gained more than a hectare in barely twenty years, radically transforming the landscape and threatening its exploitation.
As France Info indicates, it is following the erosion of the dunes that flooding has become more and more frequent, making exploitation difficult. In these conditions, the farmer and his family had no choice and became the first climate displaced persons in the department.
A difficult start
To support this forced relocation, the Conservatoire du Littoral has undertaken to buy the farm and compensate the family. Although this financial compensation is welcome, it is not enough compared to the shock of having to leave and leave what we have built over the years.
This departure highlights the effects of climate change in the region. Rising water levels, which are increasingly transforming coastal areas into uninhabitable areas, are now forcing families to abandon their land.
