In , one in six adults does not master French, according to an INSEE study published on November 6. In other words, specifies Jamel Mekkaoui, head of the studies division at the institute, 17% of the population, or 91,000 people aged 18 to 64, “encounter difficulties in writing in French”. This rate is 10% in mainland and 24% in the five overseas departments and regions (DROM).

Women less affected

INSEE defends the reliability of the data by emphasizing that its investigators do not rely on declarations from those questioned. But rather on exercises to which they agreed to submit in order to assess their skills in reading and writing words as well as in understanding simple texts.
