The Abbé-Pierre residencein Caudebec-lès-Elbeuf, it’s almost over!
The buildings and the thirty or so housing units will not move, but the places will change nameafter the accusations of sexual assault and the affair which shake the memory of the founder of Emmaüs. Throughout France, many organizations and municipalities have chosen to rename streets or buildings which bore his name.
In the case of Caudebec, the City and the Foyer Stéphanais, the social landlord which manages the residence, allowed residents to choose for themselves by voting among three proposals: Mother Teresa, Audrey Hepburn and Joseph Drouet.
A local figure in the spotlight
Rather than the nun known for her humanitarian commitment or the Hollywood icon, the residents have opted for the local figure. Indeed, Joseph Drouetwhich was finally chosen, is a former mayor of the townbetween May 1884 and December 1885, who notably worked to make known the ancient past of Caudebec.
If Joseph Drouet received more than half of the votes (58%) of those who voted, it should however be noted that this participation was rather low. In fact, of the 36 households invited to vote, only 12 of them (33%) returned the questionnaire to the town hall.
“In the coming weeks”, according to a press release from the City, the Foyer Stéphanais will replace the panels and signage.
On the other hand, there will be no notable change for residents, who will not have to change their address with La Poste, suppliers or state services. “The addressing being carried out on the basis of the street and the number”, specifies the City, which “will make the changes in the electoral list and modify the directional signage in the streets”.
