The sun made a shy appearance, this Sunday, November 10, 2024, for a little over an hour. A first since the start of the month for the department of Maine-et-Loire.
The Météo France station in Beaucouzé – the one which is the reference for Maine-et-Loire – had not recorded any sunshine since Tuesday October 29. “A historic record”, according to Laurent Belsœur, meteorologist based within the Departmental Fire and Rescue Service (Sdis) of Beaucouzé.
A broken record?
This period of almost two weeks of fog and no sun would be due to an anticyclone covering Europe and pressing ambient humidity to the ground, according to meteorologist Sébastien Decaux.

On Sunday, November 10, the weather station recorded sunshine lasting 1.1 hours during the day, marking the only sunny hour of the month of November for the moment.
A rate for the moment well below the lowest sunshine recorded during the month of November 1994 and which was a little higher than 37 hours. However, there is no guarantee that this record will be broken this year.
A wave of cold air
The return of the sun marks the end of this long episode of fog which particularly affected a large part of the West and the North. However, temperatures will not rise this week.

According to Météo France forecasts, the sun will shine again in the West tomorrow, but will be accompanied by a cold snap starting this evening. This drop in temperatures is linked to the passage of a cold drop phenomenon, a pocket of very cold air located at more than 5,000 m altitude.
This change in temperature should not last over time and would fade this weekend, according to Météo France forecasts.
