A commune in Cotentin rewarded for its initiatives strengthening Franco-German friendship

The city ​​hall from Picauville (Manche) announced Friday November 8, 2024 that the commune was honored by the German embassy.

The first councilor, Marie-Hélène Perrotte, was invited by Ambassador Stephan Steinlein in person to receive the prize of Franco-German friendship the October 23, 2024.

Strengthen friendship

The ceremony took place at the German Embassy in in the presence other winners.

The prize was awarded to the mayor and the municipality of Picauville, in gratitude for different initiatives aimed at strengthen Franco-German friendship and in particular welcoming the military each year on the occasion of commemoration ceremonies of the Landing.

“Let us remember that the commune of Picauville was the first commune to welcome German soldiers into its territory in order to celebrate “rediscovered peace” and this has continued for more than ten years,” explains the town hall.

It is important to emphasize that this would not have been possible without the participation of elected officials, the population as well as associations responsible for the duty of memory. Thank you to everyone who works to ensure that this precious Franco-German friendship continues.

Picauville welcomes a group of German soldiers every year in June during the period of the anniversary of the Landing of 1944. Towards 100 German soldiers settle down on the stadium de Picauville.

In addition to participating in the region's official ceremonies, they join the annual meal, participate in football matches et invite schoolchildren de Picauville to eat with them in their camp.
