It was one of the most admired Spanish painters by his contemporaries. His paintings were enormously successful during his lifetime. And he will be entitled to an exhibition in Castres (Tarn), notably thanks to loans from Orsay museum.
Well known in Spain, he is on the walls of largest museumsfrom the Louvre to the Metropolitan in New York. Of course, passing by the Prado in Madrid and the National Art Museum of Catalonia in Barcelona. So of course, his arrival at Goya museum is an event.
Parmi les Picasso, Dalí, Miró and Velázquez
Because it’s obviously at the Goya Museum that it’s happening. Reopened in 2023 after several years of closure and a major restoration costing 15 million euros, the Goya Museum has a unique collection in Europe. It is the only one to be entirely devoted to the art of the Iberian Peninsula, from Antiquity to the present day. Velázquez, Murillo, Picasso, Dalí, Miró, Tapiés and other great masters are housed there. Not counting, of course, Goya.
From December 6, 2024 until March 9, 2025, several emblematic works of Mariano Fortuny y Marsalfrom the collections of the Musée d'Orsay will be exhibited in its rooms as part of the exhibition “Mariano Fortuny. Visions of the Orient.”
Between the impressionists and the orientalists
Mariano Fortuny y Marsal only lived 36 years (1838-1874), but he is one of the most influential artists of his time, recognized for his depictions of historical and oriental scenes in North Africa. His peak coincided with the beginnings of Impressionism, but his subjects also placed him in the Orientalist camp.
The exhibition will highlight exceptional works loaned by Orsay. In addition, of course, to those that the Goya Museum already has.
Among the works presented there will be:
- North African landscape: in the foreground a place with nativescirca 1870-1874
- Moorish courtyard cornercirca 1870-1874
- Study of left hand and armorcirca 1870-1874
