The conflict of Sahara occidental continues to crystallize the tensions between the Morocco and the Front Polisario. This disputed area, a former Spanish colony bordering the Atlantic, has represented a major territorial issue since the 1970s. Morocco claims its sovereignty over this territory and is proposing an autonomy plan, while the Polisario Front is campaigning for independence. There France recently reaffirmed its support for the Moroccan position, considering the autonomy plan as a basis “ serious and credible » to resolve this dispute which has persisted for almost half a century.
A scathing response to the royal speech
The Sahrawi government has just reacted strongly to the king’s recent declarations Mohammed VI regarding the Sahara occidental. In a press release released by the agency SPSrepresentatives of Front Polisario affirm that the royal speech cannot alter either the historical foundations or the legal framework of the Sahrawi question. For the independence movement, this issue remains fundamentally linked to decolonization, and the right to self-determination of the Sahrawi people constitutes an inalienable principle.
Obstacles to conflict resolution
Sahrawi officials point the finger at the responsibility of Morocco in the stalemate of international negotiations. According to them, Rabat deliberately obstructs the implementation of UN resolutions and the African settlement plan. Moroccan attempts to impose an alternative solution face fierce opposition from the Front Polisariowhich refuses any compromise on the question of self-determination.
The weight of international support
Changing diplomatic positions further complicate the resolution of the conflict. THE Front Polisario expresses its indignation at the rallying of Spain and from France to the Moroccan autonomy project. The independence movement considers the change in position of Madrid, the former colonial administrator of the territory, particularly problematic. This new diplomatic situation reinforces the feeling of isolation of the Front Polisario, while the final status of Sahara occidental remains unresolved despite decades of fruitless negotiations.
