The exhibition “Amiens in time, tribute to Maurice Duvanel”which is held at the Glisy arts hall until November 24takes us back to the history of the city. This cultural event highlights the journey of Maurice Duvanel, Journeyman roofer, local historian, photographer and enthusiast of Notre-Dame d'Amiens Cathedral, who died eight years ago.
The story of a friendship
The initiative for these works is based on a strong and striking friendship which linked Maurice Duvanel et Anthony Esteves Afonsotoday employed at the Musée de Picardie. The two met in 2012 during a guided tour of the cathedral, which was the starting point of a mentoring relationship. Maurice Duvanel then accompanied and supported Anthony Esteves Afonso in his academic career, offering him valuable help.
As part of this tribute, Maurice Duvanel's widow entrusted Anthony Esteves Afonso with part of her husband's personal collection. It includes large format prints from the Société des antiquaires de Picardiewhich illustrate scenes from the town of Amiens between the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century. These photographs exhibited in Glisy serve as a reminder of the generosity of Maurice Duvanel, recognized for his human commitment and his selfless support for others.
The reading room renamed in honor of the exhibition
Alongside this presentation, the reading room of the municipal and community archives d'Amiens, located at 50 rue Riolan, was renamed in honor of Maurice Duvanel, thus highlighting its importance for local memory. This symbolic gesture marks official recognition of its investment in the cultural heritage of the city. The Archives, in the same spirit of preserving and promoting local history, have also enriched their collection with a precious series of 5 000 documents bequeathed by Maurice Duvanel.
These documents, which testify to his deep commitment to the collective memory of Amiens, cover various aspects of local life, from significant events to everyday stories, offering future generations privileged access to the memories and knowledge of the community. Thanks to this donation, the Archives now have a unique set of resources which strengthen their mission of safeguarding and transmitting Amiens' historical heritage.
