The announcement by the mayor of Verdun (Meuse), Samuel Hazard, had the effect of a bombshell this Tuesday evening during a meeting at town hall. According to information from our colleagues from L'Est Républicain, the councilor decided to sign a order prohibiting the takeaway sale of beers over six degrees in a specific area of the city center.

The objective? Reduce public drunkenness and associated disorders

A targeted ban on strong beers

The decree, effective from this Monday, November 11 and until December 31specifically concerns beers exceeding six degrees. Around ten businesses in the center are affected by this announcement, such as grocery stores and tobacco shops, while bars and restaurants are not affected. The ban will apply between 7 a.m. and 10 p.m.

“They will buy elsewhere”

Several traders point out the limits of the ban, fearing that customers looking for strong beers will head to supermarkets on the outskirts before returning to drink in the center.

An irrevocable measure?

Despite the objections, the mayor remains firm but this test phase remains for the moment “experimental”. In January, an initial assessment will be made to measure the impact of this unprecedented decision in the center of Verdun.
