The robin, a little bird symbol of hope which adorns the logo of Auchan stores (managed by the Mulliez family association, also owner of Leroy Merlin and Decathlon), never ceases to disappoint. Less than five years after a first significant workforce reduction (1,475 positions eliminated and more than 500 voluntary departures), Auchan Retail announced this Tuesday, November 5, a new bloodletting to the representatives of its employees in France. This time, 2,389 jobs are threatened (out of 54,000 in France) and around ten “unprofitable” stores and warehouses are expected to close.
Vaucluse, which has three hypermarkets (Avignon Nord Le Pontet, one of the largest shopping centers in France, Avignon Sud Mistral 7 and Cavaillon) and two supermarkets (Sénas and Le Pontet), would not be spared. “If rumors are to be believed, possibly 150 out of 1,280 jobs are at risk across the entire living area (geographical territory in the jargon, which also includes the Auchan supermarket in Tarascon, in Bouches-du-Rhône, Editor's note)”, fears David Romagnani, FO Le Pontet union delegate.
