” The beekeeping industry in 2024 in the Hérault region presents a contrasting outcome, with another trying year for our bee colonies,” reveal the Young Farmers -JA- from Hérault.

This year, beekeeping encountered many challenges: after a good start at the end of winter, with little mortality and solid reserves in the hives, rosemary honey flow started well in certain sectors. However, spring was marked by difficult weather conditions, particularly in the scrublands.

Little chestnut honey

Irregular rains, as well as a lack of nectar and of pollen have made feeding the colonies essential until May. “Despite this, the end of spring offered some beautiful late honey flows, particularly on dorycnium and bramble. On the other hand, the conditions did not allow an abundant harvest on the chestnut trees in the upper cantons,” analyze the JA 34.

Faced with the summer heat and drought, beekeepers had to transhume their hives to more favorable areas such as Provence, in the east and Lauragais, in the west. The harvest of sunflower was timid, but that of lavender honey was more satisfactory.

As winter approaches, the pressure of asian hornet which disturbs the bees and limits their foraging, posed an additional challenge. Despite recent storms, more rain would be needed to support vegetation. Another reality to overcome, apiary thefts more numerous, particularly north of Béziers.

“We now look towards 2025, leaving behind a year 2024 marked by difficulties and exhaustion. As for the honey market, it still remains disorganized, which further complicates the work of beekeepers,” deplore the JA 34.

Imports

Observation of the Young Farmers of Hérault: “First of all, consumer distrust, fueled by the various scandals relayed by the media on falsified or adulterated honey, in particular those imported from China, which are widely found in large areas. Then, the importation of cheap honey into Europe contributes to lowering the prices of wholesale honey in , while our costs are increasing. This could create cash flow pressures and lead to a reduction in purchases of French honey by traders.” And to launch, all honey, this appeal to consumers: “'Buying French honey means supporting our beekeepers while enjoying an authentic, high-quality product.' A message regarding the risk of decline of these earth lovers in the age of climate change.
