POLICY – Response on form rather than substance. The parliamentary niche of the National Rally of October 31 gave rise to heated debates. The far-right party notably presented a bill aimed at “to relax the conditions for expulsion of foreigners constituting a serious threat to public order”. It gave rise to a skirmish between Marine Le Pen and Antoine Léaument, as you can see in the video at the top of the article.

Just before the exchange, communist MP Soumya Bourouaha was booed after declaring she wanted to speak “ as the daughter of immigrants ».

Antoine Léaument then spoke to defend her. “ Madame Le Pen, you say you want to expel those who are a threat to the Republic. (…) But it is you who threaten the Republic by forgetting that 20 million of our compatriots have at least one parent, one grandparent, one great-grandparent who was an immigrant “, he assured. The rebel then invited the descendants of immigrants in the chamber to raise their hands.

Text removed

The president of the far-right group in the Assembly then retorted: “ Yes, Mr. Léaument, our president is also called Jordan Bardella », imitating the choppy and theatrical tone of his opponent. The president of the RN likes to recall his Italian origins to which he devotes a good part of his book. A way to counter accusations of xenophobia and to defend his vision of immigration which involves assimilation.

At the end of the discussion, my rapporteur finally withdrew the text after a majority of MEPs voted for the deletion of its flagship article. It aimed to establish an obligation of expulsion for foreigners falling under a “serious threat to public order”.
