It had never fallen so much rain in October in Yvelines for over a century

The recurrence and vigor of bad weather of October 2024 have not escaped anyone. And even less on InfoClimat’s radars. Storm Kirk was particularly unleashed in Yvelines between October 9 and 10, bringing its share of floods, with particular intensity in the south of the department. The rainfall data for the past month has fallen and several records were beaten in the territory.

• Rainfall 175% higher than the norm

September 2024 had already been a record month. With these 107.1 mm of rain falling, the excess rainfall was measured at +115% compared to the standard established over the period 1991/2020 (around 62 mm). October 2024 was even further, with a differential of +175% and 169.4 mm of cumulative rain.

The pic was reached, without much surprise, on Wednesday October 9, the date of the passage of Kirk. In less than twenty-four hours, 80 mm of water fell on the department. Some additional 32 mm were showered from the sky the following week on Thursday October 17 alone.

• The fifth rainiest month in the department since… 1918

According to InfoClimat figures, October 2024 would be the fifth month rainier since 1918 in Yvelines, behind August 1931 (177.7 mm), December 1999 (178.4 mm), July 2001 (181 mm) and… May 2016 (193.7 mm).

That year, between Saturday May 28 and Tuesday May 31, the department (like neighboring Eure-et-Loir) endured major floods. The peak rainfall in twenty-four hours (66 mm on Monday May 30) was however below the mark from October 9, 2024 (80 mm as a reminder).

• The “wetter” month of October in the history of the territory

According to InfoClimat databases, no October since 1918 had only been as rainy as that of 2024. The record previously dated from 1981, with 163.5 mm of cumulative rain (also 159 mm in 1998).
