The official Remembrance Day ceremony took place in Millau this Friday, November 1, late in the morning.
It was an official Remembrance Day ceremony which took place under the sun – a rare enough event to be highlighted in advance by the participants – this Friday 1is November in Millau, at the War Memorial of the Equality cemetery.
Fight against oblivion
A ceremony to pay tribute to all the fighters who died for France. As is customary, only Bernard Rainero, local president of Souvenir Français, spoke.
“We pay tribute to those who allowed France to remain free, time erases neither the courage nor the suffering of these brave soldiers, he indicated. Remembering them is once again, honoring their memory and their sacrifice, it is also fighting against oblivion.”
The local manager then recalled the role of Souvenir Français, that “to raise awareness among as many of our fellow citizens as possible to safeguard the graves of those who died for France”. The association, recognized as being of public utility but not benefiting from state subsidies, operates through fundraising.
Maintaining the graves
In particular, it finances the renovation of abandoned graves of soldiers who died for France and commemorative monuments. “If you do not accept that the Poilus of 14, the fighters of 40 to 44, the resistance fighters of the dark years, the fighters of Indochina and Algeria, did not die for nothing, then give us your support.” added Bernard Rainero.
After the laying of wreaths and the Ringing of the Dead, the ceremony continued with the observation of a minute of silence and the interpretation by Élan Millavois of The Marseillaise.
