After the torrential rains which flooded several towns in the south-east of Spain, rescue operations are continuing to try to find those still missing. France, through Bruno Retailleau, offered its help to the country which has so far declined the proposal. And you, do you think that France should invest more in operations in Spain?
France alongside Spain. After the deadly floods in the south-east of Spain, France, through Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau, offered assistance to his Spanish counterpart. At the microphone of BFMTV, the member of the executive explained that France had proposed sending reinforcements and relief, namely “200 firefighters with all equipment“. A proposal that Spanish Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska has for the moment declined.
According to the statements of the tenant of Place Beauvau who detailed the outlines of his telephone call with Fernando Grande-Marlaska, the Spanish emergency services are currently organizing themselves in a first phase with their own means.
Research still ongoing
Faced with the chaos caused by the floods, French solidarity is also organizing at the local level. In Panazol (Haute-Vienne), whose town is twinned with that of Picanya near Valence, mayor Fabien Doucet could not hide his emotion on BFMTV. “We were very emotional and immediately gave our support. […] We will try to do what we can to help them as best as possible.“, he explained.
On site, rescue operations continue in desolate landscapes to try to find the people still missing. In Letur, a town located in the province of Albacete, at least five people are still missing after the flash rise in water levels.
According to a final assessment which is still provisional, the floods which hit Spain are considered the deadliest since those of October 1973, which, at the time, cost the lives of 300 people.
