The Fontaine-de-Vaucluse site has just reached an important milestone by joining the prestigious list of 200 geological heritage sites of the International Union of Geological Sciences (IUGS)announces France Bleu Vaucluse.
The ranking, announced at the 37th International Geological Congress in Busan, Republic of Korea, places the Vauclusian karst source in 185th place in the world.
An exceptional site for science and nature
This recognition crowns years of research carried out by the hydrogeology laboratory of the University of Avignon, which defended the site’s candidacy. Experts welcomed the importance of Fontaine-de-Vaucluse in understanding geological processesbecause of its unique phenomena and its contribution to Earth’s history.
Laurent Rhodet, director of the Sorgues Basin Mixed Union, sees in this distinction a “pride for all Vauclusians” and proof of the exceptionality of this site.
