Pastoralists: an endangered species

At the start of the academic year, the gaze of the French-speaking Reformed Churches is turning towards the theology courses in Lausanne and Geneva. Their concern? Find out if their
ranks will be enough to compensate for the announced shortage of pastors, following the retirement of
baby boomers.
For the 2024-2025 academic year, the number of new students enrolled in
theology totals eight, distributed equally between Lausanne and Geneva. A workforce
to which are added 20 new registrants in the distance offering. As for diplomas,
the previous year will have validated six masters (five in Geneva, only one in Lausanne) – title
necessary to engage in pastoral formation strictly speaking.
“The situation is taken very seriously by the Churches,” says Jean-Baptiste Lipp, president of the Conference of French-speaking Reformed Churches (CER). All the more so, he adds, since a
“a significant number of theology students give up, along the way, on a project
pastoral».
