ORGAN DONATION, SENEGAL INTENSIFIES ITS EFFORTS FOR TRANSPLANTS

On the occasion of World Organ Donation Day, celebrated this October 17, the Ministry of Health and Social Action (MSAS) reaffirmed Senegal’s commitment to organ transplants, in particular in the context of end organ failure. Established in 2005 by the World Health Organization (WHO), this day raises awareness of the issues linked to organ failure, affecting thousands of patients awaiting transplants every day.

According to the ministry, “Senegal has taken important steps in this area, in particular with the establishment of a regulatory framework aimed at organizing organ donation and transplantation. »

Under the aegis of the MSAS, the National Council for Donation and Transplantation (CNDT) has established strict procedures and quality standards for kidney transplants. In 2023 and 2024, four kidney transplants were performed, marking significant progress for patients suffering from end-stage renal disease.

At the same time, the country has also legislated to regulate corneal transplants, bringing new hope to people with visual impairments. This approach is part of a broader desire to broaden the legislative framework to bone marrow transplants and to introduce the possibility of multi-organ harvesting from deceased donors.

The ministry stressed that transplantation remains the preferred therapeutic solution for patients waiting for organs. By strengthening its regulatory system and continuing discussions to improve and diversify the types of transplants, Senegal is positioning itself as a leading player in the fight against terminal organ failure.

MSAS is committed to ensuring the safety and effectiveness of these projects to offer new life perspectives to patients while reducing the socio-economic impact linked to avoidable deaths due to organ failure.
