The Meurthe-et-Moselle Food Bank is looking for volunteers. She opened her doors Wednesday October 16 to show his deposit and allow curious people and partners to discover his work. The association takes the opportunity to launch an appeal: As the major national collection approaches, on November 22 and 23, it is looking for 800 volunteersto complete his very motivated team.

Food Bank vest on her back, Corinne has just filled a refrigerated truck. For a month since she retired, this resident of Villey-Saint-Étienne, near Toul, comes every Wednesday. She is getting ready to leave itinerant food distribution in rural areas : “In this truck, there are the crates that we will deliver this afternoon to around forty families, she describes. There are dried products, fruits and vegetables, meat, fish, yogurts, pastries too…” Volunteer for him “brings a lot” since she says to herself “very sensitive to the fact that not everyone has enough to eat today in . She adds: “We don’t just bring fruits and vegetables. We try to bring our smile and our kindness to people.”

“Volunteering has changed”

“It makes you feel useful”adds Corinne. Like her, 80 volunteers take turns at the Meurthe-et-Moselle Food Bank. More “volunteering has changed”according to Jean, volunteer then employee, member of the association for 13 years. “In the past, volunteers came very regularly, while new volunteers come more episodically. But then, we can understand… With the cost of living increasing, new generations of volunteers, often retired, prefer to keep the grandchildren on Wednesdays when the parents no longer have the means to put them in a crèche or pay a nanny.”

Large national collection

Any help is welcome and the Food Bank continues to look for new volunteers. Gilbert l’Hote, president of the association in Meurthe-et-Moselletried to convince during the open days: “The call is simple: come join us, give it a try. There are lots of positions here: it can range from the office, from communications, but also reception with boxes to sort, weigh, list. There is distribution, product selection…” Gilbert l’Hote recognizes that there are times when he is “a little stuck”. For this year’s big national collection, he is looking for 800 volunteersand even after collection: “With at least 45 people, it will take five days to sort and put everything away, because I think I will make 100 to 110 tonnes of goods.”

The Meurthe-et-Moselle Food Bank allows 80 associations to distribute food to 25,000 people each month, 2,300 tonnes of food have already been distributed this year. The number of beneficiaries is increasing, but there are fewer and fewer goods.
