Wildlife: increased monitoring of illegal hunting practices

Around forty investigation files were opened concerning illegal practices surrounding moose hunting last week.

The Ministry of Wildlife and Parks launched a prevention operation aimed at protecting moose during the Thanksgiving long weekend.

Carried out by the Protection of Quebec Wildlife (PFQ), Operation Panache mobilized around a hundred agents to meet the hunters.

The annual operation also makes it possible to collect information for possible prosecutions.

In all, 1,973 people, hunters and vacationers, were met and fifteen were registered at the SOS Poaching – Wildlife Emergency call center.

The main violations noted are as follows:

  • Hunting without a license;
  • Illegal possession of game;
  • Possession of a loaded firearm in a vehicle;
  • Hunting without a bib.

Five moose were also seized and all of the edible portions were given to organizations and food banks.

Operation Panache continues in other regions of Quebec during the hunting period.

At all times and confidentially, citizens are invited to report any act of poaching, suspicious situation or action against wildlife or its habitats to 1 800 463-2191 or via the Internet to SOS Braconnage – Urgence fauna savage.
