The square in front of City Hall is transformed into an urban forest

The town hall square is being transformed! From this Wednesday, October 16, 2024, work to green the emblematic square begins. For eight months, this project, in the heart of the capital, plans to plant 55 trees to combat heat islands and promote urban biodiversity. This symbolic project is part of the ecological policy led by Anne Hidalgo, with the work scheduled to end in June 2025.

The Hotel Square changes and transforms into island of freshness. From this Wednesday October 16work begins which will give the space a completely new look. We’ll have to wait 8 months of workor around June 30, 2025, if all goes well, to enjoy this transformed space again.

Ce revegetation project aims to transform the square in front of the 4th district in a green space. 55 trees will be planted on this vast concrete slab, and groves of plants will decorate the sides of the esplanade. This process is part of a broader approach by the town hall to reintroduce nature into an urban environmentdespite technical constraints such as the presence of an underground car park. This future urban forest will thus reduce heat islands, while providing a refuge for local biodiversity.

This project, announced in 2019 by the mayor of , is part of an ambitious plan aimed at creating several mini-forests in the heart of the city. Although some projects have been abandoned, that of the Town Hall is moving forward, with the aim of rethink public space and offer a more resilient city in the face of global warming. The creation of this new forest contributes to making the center of Paris more pleasantwhile offering a breath of fresh air to Parisians and visitors.

The revegetation work will also include the repair of the fountains, the installation of a suitable watering system and the installation of an optimized substrate for the development of trees. These technical interventions will be closely monitored to guarantee the sustainability of this green space. Parisians will be able to discover this new urban lung from next summer, a strong symbol of environmental change underway in the capital.

At the end of this work, the square will have two new green spaceslocated on either side of the esplanade, while its center will remain clear and easily accessible. However, despite this central opening, the Christmas market will have to be relocated, as there will no longer be enough space for activities such as the toboggan runs or the climbing tower. It is undoubtedly on the side of the Place de la Concorde that we will have to find ourselves to see the Paris Christmas Village 2024.

In accordance with town planning requirements, in particular to preserve the view of the nearby Notre-Dame Cathedral, the south side of the square will open onto a vast clearing, offering a clear perspective on the building. Once this new green zone is completed, a fourth urban forest should be created at Place du Colonel-Fabien, after those at Place de Catalogne and de Charonne.

Beyond its aesthetic character, this urban forest embodies a direct response to climate issues, by promoting freshness in our ultra-urban environment.
