Council of Europe: Morocco’s pioneering experience in water management highlighted in

– Morocco’s pioneering experience in water resources management was highlighted on Tuesday in Strasbourg on the occasion of the 47th session of the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of the Council of Europe (CoE).

Speaking as part of the work of the Governance Commission, Fatna K’hiel, member of the Moroccan delegation taking part in this meeting, recalled the dam policy adopted by Morocco since the 1960s, stressing that it has enabled the Kingdom to set itself up as a model in terms of preserving and saving this precious commodity and rationalizing its use.

The president of the Moroccan network of elected women underlined, in this sense, the importance of these dams in the collection of rainwater, while in Morocco, as everywhere else, water stress is increasingly felt, making also echoes Morocco’s experience in the areas of seawater desalination and wastewater reuse.

Furthermore, the president of the municipality of Arbaoua focused on the effects of climate change on water resources, recalling the recent floods recorded in southern Morocco.

“In the Merzouga desert, very popular with tourists and known for its palm trees and breathtaking dunes, gigantic lakes were formed following these floods, an immediate effect of climate change, completely changing the landscape and way of life of the region,” she said.

Faced with this phenomenon and in order to better preserve water and ensure ecological balance, for the good of future generations, the former Secretary of State for Housing called for the development of sustainable and long-term universal strategies. term, through the sharing of experiences and the use of new technologies.

In addition to Ms. K’hiel, the Moroccan delegation participating in the work of the 47th session of the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of the Council of Europe (15-17 October) includes the president of the Moroccan Association of Presidents of Councils of prefectures and provinces, Abdelaziz Derouich, and the presidents of the Dakhla-Oued Eddahab and Rabat-Salé-Kénitra regions, respectively Yanja El-Khattat and Rachid El-Abdi.

The Moroccan delegation is also made up of Rahma Ouazzani Taibi (vice-president of the municipality of Rabat) and the Secretary of the delegation, Mostafa Ameur.

The Kingdom is participating in this session in its capacity as Partner for Local Democracy. It was the first country to obtain this status from the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of the CoE, during its 36th session in April 2019.

This status offers countries in the Council of Europe’s neighborhood a privileged framework for dialogue and institutional contacts with their European counterparts.
