Strasbourg (Bas-Rhin) ranks among the cities where the baguette is the most expensive in France. In a study conducted by Hello Fresh and relayed by BFM TV this Sunday, October 13, 2024, the European capital comes in second position, with an average price of €1.19. The baguette therefore costs as much as in Paris.
Bordeaux (Gironde) completes the podium with an average price of €1.12, while Marseille brings up the rear at €0.97.
Hello Fresh reveals that, since the creation of the baguette in the XXe century, its price has continued to increase, largely due to inflation. From 66 cents in 2001, its average price rose to 90 cents between 2012 and 2020, a period during which it remained stable. Then, in 2022, it reached 93 cents, a significant increase of 6% observed between 2020 and 2022, specifies the study. Today, it is common to see prices exceed €1 in bakeries.
How to explain the €1.19 in Strasbourg? In an interview given to BFMTVJosé Arroyo, president of the federation of bakers and pastry chefs of Bas-Rhin, highlights the increase in rents. “They fluctuate between €8,000 and €15,000 per month” he specifies. Another professional, manager of six brands in the area, mentions an electricity bill « multiplied by six » which forced it to adjust its prices. “For a store like ours, the bill went from €7,000 to €25,000” he confides to our colleagues. « If I could have stayed at one euro, I would have stayed at one euro” he concludes.
