SENEGAL-WINTER-SINISTRE / Bakel: Jean-Baptiste Tine announces the delivery of food – Senegalese press agency

Bakel, Oct 14 (APS) – The Minister of the Interior and Public Security, Jean-Baptiste Tine, announced Monday that food convoys will be sent to Bakel, in the Tambacounda region (east), for come to the aid of populations affected by the rising waters of the Senegal River.

“Starting tomorrow morning, the convoys of food, especially drinking water, will arrive and will be transported to places where they are really needed,” he announced.

Jean-Baptiste Tine was in Bakel on Monday to express the compassion of the Head of State and the government to the populations of villages affected by the flooding of the Senegal River.

“I came to express the compassion of both the President of the Republic and the entire government in these difficult times and to reassure them of the measures taken by the government to provide them with the maximum possible assistance” , declared the Minister of the Interior.

Jean-Baptiste Tine was speaking at the end of the visit he made by canoe to the villages of Koughany, Golmy, Yafera and Aroundou, to see the extent of the disaster that occurred following the overflowing of the waters of the Senegal River.

The Minister of the Interior was accompanied by his counterpart from Family and Solidarity, Maïmouna Dièye and representatives of several ministries.

According to Mr. Tine, this government assistance has already started in the Matam region a few days ago and will continue in Bakel.

”The material damage is very significant, particularly to crops and homes. Many homes are still under water, residents are either taking refuge on the roofs of houses or in other houses of their parents or in neighboring villages not yet impacted,” he said.

The minister was delighted to have noted no loss of human life with the excesses and called on those affected to be calm and vigilant.

“I congratulate the administrative authorities for the measures taken from the first hours of this crisis. They took charge of rescue and assistance operations to minimize the consequences of this rising water level as much as possible,” he said.
