(Keystone-ATS) The people of Valais elect their municipal representatives on Sunday. Nearly a thousand candidates are vying for some 700 executive seats.

During the last municipal elections, four years ago, the Center won around 38% of the votes, the PLR 30%, the left 8%, the UDC around 6%, the Greens around 3% and the Green Party ‘liberal (PVL) 0.5%. However, these figures should be taken with a grain of salt, knowing that some elected officials from these parties appeared on citizen lists.

Center and Greens observed

The evolution of the Center will be particularly observed. Although in the majority, the party lost weight four years ago (-6%) when it was still called PDC.

For the next legislature, he hopes to “remain the canton’s leading supplier of political personnel”. He is also counting on his new name to regain momentum, like the 2023 federal elections.

The results of the Greens are also particularly awaited. The party made a splash four years ago, going from one elected official to a dozen. At the national level, however, the green wave subsided during last year’s federal elections.

Little hectic cities

The PLR, the PS and the UDC intend to maintain their gains, or even expand their representation, particularly in the cities. In the latter, observers expect a certain stability. As for the latest arrival, the PVL, it hopes to develop in the Valais political landscape.

All parties struggled to find candidates for these elections, especially in small towns. In eight of them, any citizen will be eligible, due to a lack of candidates.
