What is the fine if we don’t vote? Can we not go vote? What are we risking? – Elections 2024 in Belgium

The first results of the municipal elections

The counting of votes has started in the polling stations of the municipalities of Belgium. Our interactive module allows you to see the electoral figures evolve as this long-term work progresses. Refresh this page regularly to have the most up-to-date results possible. The full results for each municipality will (probably) be known at the end of the evening: you will then be able to have a precise idea of the majority list for your municipality, the candidate who won the most preference votes, etc.

What is a spoiled ballot? And a blank vote?

An invalid vote is a vote on which there is an inscription or which is spread over several lists. A blank vote is perfectly blank: the voter has chosen to give his or her vote neither for a list, nor for one, one or more political party candidates.

However, the consequence is the same: in both cases, the vote is considered an abstention – whether the act is voluntary or involuntary.

In Belgium, blank and invalid votes are counted, but are not taken into account when distributing seats between parties.

Blank vote, invalid vote, abstention: what do you risk? What’s the difference? How are they counted?
