Floriffoux: in the middle of the search, this Thursday morning, the police discovered two marmosets, a serval, a sugar glider (photos)

Between two dog rescue operations following the floods in Couvin and its campsites, Lara Sohet, coordinator of the Animal Disaster Team based in Gembloux, explains this atypical intervention. “We were contacted by the firefighters, themselves called by the police who were searching the premises for another reason. In every room of the house there were exotic animals, not allowed to be kept in Belgium.

The intervention organization for animals in distress and its volunteers thus had to deal with two white-crested marmosets, a serval, three small turtles and “a sugar glider “.A what?”He’s the lemur’s friend in the film Madagascar!

Hide and seek

With nets and poles, rescuers tried to catch the most lively species. “A house has no shortage of places for marmosets to hide. “We had to flush them out.”The serval was in the garage, it had an opening in a floorboard. We had to climb a ladder to capture him.”

Ultimately, the operation lasted two hours. After which, Lara Sohet was able to return to the bedside of the less exotic victims of the floods.

First flight for flood dogs

In the Couvin region, we intervened to save two goats and a sheep.“Thursday afternoon, the coordinator and volunteers were working with dogs present in the submerged campsites.”All evacuations are carried out by helicopter. We take care of these pets transported so far in travel bags. We return them to their owner or, when the owner has had to be rehoused, we temporarily place them in a shelter.
