Swiss skier Niels Hintermann will have to fight cancer this winter

Suddenly, there was silence for a few seconds. “Genau,” sighed Niels Hintermann with a sad smile. The 29-year-old Zurich skier, sixth best downhiller in the world last season, had just announced to the media gathered at the Hirslanden clinic in Zurich that, this winter, he was not going to fight for the crystal globes, but against cancer .

Usually, when an athlete has to withdraw, Swiss-Ski sends a press release compiling all the essential information: type of injury, estimated duration of convalescence, declaration of the main interested party. It’s a commonplace affair in this sport which puts a strain on the body. When the federation announced, Wednesday morning, that Niels Hintermann would miss the entire 2024-2025 season for “health reasons”, and that he would give a press conference with doctor Walter O. Frey to say more, it was obvious that the news was going to be particularly bad.
