For the Thanksgiving long weekend, there are several activities to do for free in Montreal. Many will be able to take advantage of this extra day off to discover what the city has to offer, while avoiding spending their hard-earned money.

A film festival with a marathon lasting until the early hours, Oktoberfest festivities, an autumn market, a show humor and a small farm that arrives in the streets of the metropolis, here are some examples of what awaits you.

Participate in the free activities of the Festival du Nouveau Cinéma

Why you have to go: The Festival du Nouveau Cinéma celebrates its 53rd edition in October and through the paid events, some free activities are offered to you. Friday, a karaoke evening with music live is organized and this Saturday, you can show up for the film marathon Jaws which ends early Sunday morning. Monday is the launch of the Ramen Ramen festival and for the occasion, you are invited to attend the screening of the comedy Tampopo, while eating soup if you feel like it.

If you have a few dollars to spend, you can choose from more than 100 craft beers at low prices.

Watch a movie with popcorn for free

Why you need to go: While spending a small fortune at the cinema, why not enjoy a free popcorn movie at the Benny Library. See farm animals at the Lachine Museum’s Harvest Festival

Why you have to go: For the Harvest Festival, the Lachine Museum transforms into a small agricultural fair. Farm animals will occupy the exterior of the building and the program will include games of skill, seed distribution, folk dancing and free tastings of traditional First Nations dishes.

Try sports and meet a CF Montreal player

When: October 10 to 13, 2024, Thursday and Friday from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Why you have to go: The sporting event Le Gymnase is coming to the Galeries d’Anjou in the Cour Aubainerie, and it’s the opportunity to practice five sports, namely soccer, football, tennis, mini-putt and hockey.

Take a hike in town

Why you need to go: To take a beautiful hike through the color-changing trees, you don’t need to leave the city. You can go to Angrignon Park, located next to the metro station of the same name, and walk on the trails that crisscross the area.
