An investment of 1.2 billion USD for 22,000 new jobs and a world-class port in Senegal

The Ndayane multifunctional port project represents a major initiative for Senegal, both economically and socially. With an estimated investment of USD 1.2 billion, it constitutes the largest private investment since the country’s independence and DP World’s largest project on a global scale.

The establishment of the container terminal in Ndayane will be spectacular. While the port of Dakar covers only 29 hectares, Ndayane will offer 300 hectares, allowing increased processing capacity. The draft will increase from 13 meters to 18 meters, allowing the reception of vessels of 22,000 TEU, compared to 6,000 TEU currently. Ndayane will also be able to simultaneously receive two 14,000 TEU vessels, which will represent a significant economy of scale and help reduce freight costs, thus directly impacting the price of goods in Dakar.

Mactar Diallo, secretary general of the autonomous port of Dakar, stressed that the project will generate around 1,600 direct jobs during the construction phase, with a projection of 22,000 jobs in the long term. In addition, the development of Ndayane will be accompanied by the creation of health infrastructure and a training center dedicated to port professions, aimed at responding to the challenges of irregular migration.

Alassane Diop, regional director for West Africa of DP World, specified that priority in recruitment will be given to young people and women from the surrounding communes, Diass, Yène and Poponguine, in order to maximize the local benefits of the project. .

Ndayane’s project also stands out for its commitment to cutting-edge, environmentally conscious technologies. The technological choices will integrate solutions aimed at reducing CO2 emissions and combating the effects of climate change, thus responding to contemporary environmental challenges.

The port of Ndayane is much more than a port project; it is a vector of economic and social development for Senegal. By promoting job creation, improving maritime competitiveness and infrastructure development, Ndayane is establishing itself as an essential solution to current challenges. The support of local communities will be crucial to fully realize this ambitious project.
