Domestic and sexual violence: the Federal Council wants to strengthen support for victims

Published on October 9, 2024 at 2:02 p.m. / Modified on October 9, 2024 at 2:04 p.m.

“Victims of violence often need to receive medical care immediately after the incident. The injuries must also be able to be observed and the traces noted by a forensic doctor as quickly as possible. The observation made by the Federal Council is not new, but cantonal practices in terms of support diverge greatly. And while it is essential that victims have easy access to emergency help provided by medical personnel, not all cantons offer 24-hour access to a specialized service.

It is in particular to remedy these shortcomings and to harmonize care in the country that the government is proposing this Wednesday a revision of the law on victim assistance (LAVI), which is open for consultation until January 24. 2025. The aim of this development: to clarify the roles between the cantons and the Confederation, to harmonize the quality criteria of care and to guarantee assistance and free access to medico-legal documentation throughout the territory.
