Morocco has made significant progress in the protection of human rights, consolidating its position as a major player in this area at the continental level, said the president of the National Human Rights Council on Monday in Rabat. (CNDH), Amina Bouayach.
Speaking at the forum organized by the Diplomatic Foundation on the theme “The African system for the protection of human rights: current situation and perspectives”, Ms.
Bouayach highlighted the Moroccan experience in the promotion of human rights, stressing that the CNDH focuses, within the framework of its missions, on the examination of all questions relating to defense, promotion, protection and full exercise of rights and freedoms, as well as safeguarding the dignity of citizens.
Thanks to effective commitment, continued interaction and constant dialogue between all stakeholders, structuring reforms in the field of human rights in Morocco have been implemented, she continued.
In this context, it took up the challenges relating to the consolidation of a national system for the protection of human rights, and the achievement of convergence between programs to develop a clear public policy in terms of support for family, social protection, housing assistance and migration management.
Ms. Bouayach, on the other hand, noted that this meeting is an opportunity to discuss the challenges linked to human rights in Africa, especially since these challenges differ depending on the political, social and economic contexts of each country. .
For his part, the president of the Diplomatic Foundation, Abdelati Habek, stressed that Morocco is considered a model in terms of human rights at the Arab and African level, given its experience in terms of protection mechanisms, laws, bodies and institutions in this area.
Mr. Habek, in this sense, recalled the election of Morocco to the presidency of the UN Human Rights Council for 2024, noting that this election is the crowning achievement of the experience accumulated by the Kingdom during three terms as an active member of the Council.
The CNDH contributed through its opinions to the improvement of draft laws to support the human rights system and bring it into line with international conventions ratified by Morocco, he maintained, adding that the Council also participated in broadening the debate on human rights issues at the national and regional levels.
For his part, Rafaa Ben Achour, judge at the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights, focused on the role of this jurisdiction in the promotion of human rights and its major achievements over the 20 recent years.
This institution still faces many challenges, including restricted judicial interventions and non-compliance by certain countries with international treaties, he regretted.
This event brought together ambassadors and representatives from more than 30 countries and international organizations, in order to exchange experiences in the field of human rights and evaluate the results obtained in this area.
