Météo France has placed the departments of Gard and Lozère on orange alert for the risk of rain and flooding. Published this Monday, October 7 at 6 a.m., this alert is in effect until Tuesday, October 8 at midnight. Here’s what it is.

Orange alert for rain and flooding

The alert occurs in a context of significant rain-storm degradation in France, particularly marked in the Cévennes regions. According to Météo France, “significant accumulations in a short time are expected”, with intense precipitation expected from the night of Monday to Tuesday in three departments: Gard, Lozère and Ardèche. Over a period of just 3 to 6 hours, up to 100 millimeters of rain could fall. In total, accumulations could reach 150 to 200 millimeters in around twelve hours.

According to meteorologists, this episode of heavy rain and thunderstorms is “unusual” for the month of Octoberalthough such events can sometimes occur in Cévennesa region often affected by intense weather phenomena. Météo France underlines that this episode requires “particular vigilance due to the importance of the accumulations over a short period”.

Security measures in Gard and Lozère

These torrential rains could lead to flash floods and localized flooding. The authorities therefore recommend that residents of these departments remain vigilant and follow safety instructions. It is advisable to limit non-essential travel, keep informed of developments in the situation and prepare for possible evacuations in the event of worsening conditions. In addition: do not drive onto flooded roads, take shelter by avoiding basements and low-lying areas and finally, follow local information and updates from Météo France.
