Australia wins the 77th edition, bad luck for Belgium which finishes 16th

Australia won the 77th edition of the Motocross of Nations on Sunday at Matterley Basin in England to claim its first success in this unofficial world championship by country.

At the end of the three races on the program and with 26 points on the clock, the Australian drivers – Jett Lawrence, Kyle Webster and Hunter Lawrence – beat the United States (29 points) of Roger De Coster with Eli Tomac, Aaron Plessinger and Cooper Webb.

Kay de Wolf, the MX2 world champion, Jeffrey Herlings and Glenn Coldenhoff complete the podium for the Netherlands, 3rd (36 points).

, defending champion, is 5th (50 points).

Belgium, 16th (123 points), experienced bad luck with the fall in the first race reserved for MXGP and MX2 of Lucas Coenen, injured in the shoulder or collarbone and who did not go further.

Lucas Coenen (MX2), Brent van Doninck (MXGP) and Jago Geerts (Open) were in principle scheduled to compete in two races each. The five best results are taken into account for the final ranking. The injury of the MX2 world vice-champion ruined the Belgian hopes and completed a season considerably disrupted by major setbacks for the Belgian riders.

The first race went to Slovenian Tim Gajser (Honda) ahead of American Eli Tomac (Yamha) and Frenchman Romain Febvre (Kawasaki). Brent Van Doninck (Honda) finished 14th.

The second race for MX2 and Open saw Jago Geerts (Yamaha) finish in 11th place. The Australian Jett Lawrence (Honda) won ahead of the Spaniard Ruben Fernandez (Honda) and the German Simon Laengenfelder (GasGas).

The third and final race for the Open and MXGP categories saw Tim Gajser take his second victory of the day ahead of Jett Lawrence and Eli Tomac. Jago Geerts finished 20th. Brent van Doninck gave up.
