After the discovery of an abandoned dog in front of its premises, the Charleroi SPA decided to strengthen its surveillance system to prevent new cases. A camera will be installed at the entrance to the shelter.
At the end of September, Darko, a 4-year-old German shepherd, was found tied to a trash can in front of the Charleroi SPA, shortly after closing. A motorist discovered him just 15 minutes after the shelter closed its doors.
“This act is considered obviously despicable.“, deplores Franck Goffaux, director of the SPA. “Tying a dog like this, deliberately, to get rid of it when a quarter of an hour before, it could have been dropped off at the shelter reception” he says.
A monitoring system to deter abandonment
A complaint was filed and, to avoid further wild abandonments, the SPA has taken measures: a camera will be installed to monitor the access gate. This device already exists at the La Louvière SPA, where it has proven its effectiveness.
“It has happened on several occasions that the author of a wild abandonment has been identified.“, explains Gaëtan Sgualdino, director of the La Louvière SPA. “Some people think that they are not filmed or that it is normal to get rid of an animal like this.”
In addition to preventing abandonment, this surveillance also helps deter theft, particularly of seized animals, which some owners sometimes try to recover illegally.
The consequences of wild abandonment
Wild abandonments complicate the care of animals by shelters, which often lack essential information about the abandoned animal.
“If an animal is declared ‘found’, it will remain confined here for 10 to 12 days, while its potential owner recovers it.“, explains Franck Goffaux.
Abandoning an animal on the public highway exposes you to criminal prosecution. While waiting to find a new family, Darko, like other residents of the shelter, is patient in the SPA, in the hope of starting a new life.
