“Will children ever be citizens?” Beat Jans, head of the Federal Department of Justice and Police, will address this issue on Thursday October 10 as part of a conference organized by the University of Geneva (UNIGE) and the City of Geneva. Entrance is free.

100 years ago, the League of Nations adopted the first Declaration of the Rights of the Child, emphasizing the protection of children. Today, the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child demands that children be heard and listened to.

But is this really the case? Federal Councilor Beat Jans will speak on the subject at the Geneva alma mater. A round table will follow, during which two adolescents will make their voices heard: Naïlem Gambaye, child rights watchdog, world citizen and Noé Dene, co-president of the Swiss Federation of Youth Parliaments, member of the Geneva Youth Parliament .

Laelia Benoit, child psychiatrist at Yale University and author of the book “Infantisme”, as well as Lisa Mazzone, president of Vert-es Suisse and promoter of youth voice, will also participate.

This conference is part of Democracy Week in which UNIGE is participating for the 10th consecutive time. Under the theme “Cultivating democracy”, around forty events are being held until Thursday, including four organized by UNIGE.
