The work of Jean-Claude Wicky archived at Mémoires d’Ici

New archives for Mémoires d’Ici. The Bernese Jura Research and Documentation Center, based in St-Imier, recently received the personal archives of Provost photographer Jean-Claude Wicky. His companion handed over the personal archives of the native of Perrefitte, the negatives and even the prints of exhibition work.

“The first idea one has when one receives such archives. It’s a relief to be able to save such photographs,” explains Sylviane Messerli. For the director of Mémoires d’Ici, “Jean-Claude Wicky’s photographs are remarkable”. The photographer is particularly known for taking photos of Bolivian miners. He visited the site several times and established real relationships with the miners and their families. A film and a book will also be released in addition to exhibitions.

The journey of Jean-Claude Wicky

Jean-Claude Wicky was born in Moutier on January 28, 1946. He grew up in the family home in Perrefitte. It will also always keep its development workshop there, we can read in the press release from the Imerian institution. A commercial employee, he was hired in 1965 as a customs official in Chiasso where he was also a professional footballer for LNA. Previously, he had played at FC Moutier! He therefore lived a thousand lives before starting photography as an autodidact.

His talent has been praised on numerous occasions. Jean-Claude Wicky has received awards, including the Federal Prize for Applied Arts (1983 and 1986), a scholarship from the canton of Bern (1989), the Prize from the city of Moutier (1989) and the Special Prize from the Cultural Commission interjurassienne (2009). It has also been exhibited in prestigious institutions such as the Musée de l’Elysée in Lausanne. Jean-Claude Wicky died in 2016. /sbo-comm
