The Collegiate Church of Neuchâtel under investigation

Discover the history of the founding of the Collegiate Church and the city of Neuchâtel. An exhibition looks back at the history of the cantonal capital from its beginnings, in the 12th century. Entitled “the gift of Berthe”, it will be varnished this Thursday at 5:30 p.m. at the Galeries de l’Histoire in Neuchâtel and will be on display until June 15. Under the curatorship of Lucienne Girardier Serex, independent historian, and Laurence Terrier Aliferis, full professor of art history and museology at the University of Neuchâtel, and with the assistance of a multidisciplinary team, the exhibition aims to discover to the public the historical investigation devoted to the portal of the Collegiate Church of Neuchâtel. And more precisely to the tympanum of the portal, the ornament which is located above. It was the discovery of a drawing that launched the investigation. It came from a notebook of memories and represented this tympanum, built in the 12th century, then removed in the 17th. “It is fascinating because it represents the founders of the Collegiate Church, that is to say also of the medieval part of the Castle and therefore the first lords of Neuchâtel,” explained Lucienne Girardier Serex in “La Matinale” this Thursday . This drawing is also important because it is the only representation of the tympanum that we are sure was drawn by someone who saw it! From there, the team of researchers was able to investigate: what happened in 1672, when the tympanum was destroyed? “Until now, we thought it was pastors who broke everything,” explains the co-curator of the exhibition. “But the situation was very different, above all political, a little economic… it was not as simple as that and the decision to remove this eardrum was administrative. »

This exhibition will be opened this Thursday at the Galeries de l’Histoire in Neuchâtel, where it can then be visited until June 15. It is accompanied by a conference circle at UniNe. All the information on “The gift of Berthe” can be found here. /lgn
