The Sun at the heart of the history of Quebec

Thus, this Thursday, October 3 at 7 p.m. at the Gabrielle-Roy library, municipal political and society columnist Valérie Gaudreau will retrace the history of the newspaper for 127 years, its evolution at the heart of society, its role as a transmitter of history and archives, as well as the contemporary challenges of preserving history in a paperless world.

“This activity is a great recognition of the Soleil as an important player in the history of the City for 127 years and a witness to the major events of the last century”, comments Ms. Gaudreau, who adds that “the conference will focus a lot on the contents of the Soleil which has always dealt with questions of history and heritage.

Note initiatives such as the chronicles of Monique Duval and Louis-Guy Lemieux, the famous Yesterday to Today project by photographer Patrice Laroche, quizzes with The Historical Society of Quebec and sections like Quebec disappeared. Each of these initiatives was highly appreciated by readers.

Valérie Gaudreau explains that she began to prepare this conference entitled “The Sundaily witness to great history” while she edited the latest paper edition of the daily, published on December 30, 2023.

“I then immersed myself in the archive photos of the Soleilin old headlines, in reader testimonials. It’s so rich,” she comments.

Those interested in attending the conference should register here.

Other activities

Furthermore, other interesting activities are offered to the population at the Gabrielle-Roy library as part of the 100th anniversary of the municipal archives.

On Thursday, October 17 (7 p.m.), historian and popularizer Luc Nicole-Labrie will offer a conference on the history of beer in Quebec: from Intendant Talon’s brewery to the current brewing scene, including the golden age of the Dow, you are invited to rediscover 400 years of evolution of the sparkling beverage.

Then, on Saturday October 19, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., there will be an open house event and guided tour of the archive premises. For the occasion, archivists and technicians will showcase their work… and some well-preserved treasures.

Activities for children (puzzles and collages of old images, photo coloring workshop), consultation of the virtual exhibition Shared Memory and guided tour of the completely renovated premises, where thousands of archives of Quebec from the 19th to the 21st century are kept, are on the program.

Finally, the conference “Combining archives and current events — 100 years of Quebec history under the eye of the media”, presented on October 23, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and moderated by Valérie Gaudreau, is intended to be an opportunity for citizens to learn more about the role of archives in the work of journalists. This will be an opportunity to share a wealth of knowledge on the history and current events of Quebec City, seen through the eye of the media.
